What is a check-in? This is the moment when a dog looks at you. Check-ins grow a dog's attention on you versus the distractions around you.
Why is it important? Check-ins build value in the owner through handler awareness. You become the most valuable part of their life.
How do I teach my dog to do this? It needs to start small and in a neutral environment- your living room, backyard, etc. You'll need to reward the dog when they glance at you or in your direction. Each time they are rewarded, it will instill an understanding that they need to be looking to you for the next thing. After lots of practice, it will become a normal part of your dog's habits and rewards won't be necessary.
Check-ins were Rylan's favorite part of confidence building!
